Invite us to speak at your event/workshop/ concert/ conference/etc…

Making real world change is something that we are incredibly passionate about. We (evidently) love discussing important matters, but love it even more when we get to see and interact with our audience in real life!

In recent months, we’ve absolutely adored speaking and facilitating workshops at:

  • National Youth Orchestra of Scotland

  • National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy

  • the Royal Academy of Music

  • the Royal College of Music

We’re constantly seeking out new opportunities to connect with the creative communities and individuals. Topics we’ve spoken about include musicians’ injury awareness, our own journeys with mental illness and eating disorders, the ‘alternative biography’ and what goes on behind the accolades and highlights of musicians’ lives, addiction and substance abuse within the music industry, and the innate perfectionism that constrains so many of us!

“We hosted a workshop with Things Musicians Don't Talk About at the end of a very busy term of our London Academy. Young musicians from all our academy groups attended and responded well to the sensitive and inspiring sharing of lived experience by Hattie and Becca. NYJO young musicians could identify with the challenges Hattie and Becca have overcome and learned a great deal about balancing expectations and ambition with well-being. Hattie and Becca shared a heart-felt message of prioritising self-care, finding value on your own terms and never forgetting the joy of music! I'm sure the lessons learned and thinking inspired by this workshop will remain with our young musicians for many years to come.

“We were lucky enough to host Things Musicians Don’t Talk About on the first day of our NYOS Symphony Orchestra course where they worked with our musicians aged between 14-22. Hattie and Becca were fantastic with the way they navigated some sensitive topics through their own experience and our musicians responded incredibly well. Our young musicians have reflected on how good it was to have a forum to discuss the issues that are often difficult to talk about or brushed under the carpet. I hope that this is the start of encouraging musicians to be open and honest about how they actually feel, which will help them to enjoy wherever their musical journey takes them. Thank you Hattie and Becca!”

From A Cellists Perspective

“This fortnight, I've been joined by two graduates doing just that. Hattie Butterworth and Rebecca Toal are the two creative minds behind the aptly named "Things Musicians Don't Talk About", the forward thinking classical music podcast creating a space to talk about the emotions, struggles and vulnerabilities of classical musicians that are chronically overlooked.”
